An eBook edition of this fine biography is now available. The print edition garnered extraordinary praise; a new preface brings this eBook edition up to date.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. aspired to be a poet and philosopher, was wounded in the Civil War, courted aristocratic women, became one of the greatest judges in American history, and lived long enough to give advice to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. We see though Holmes’s eyes, and his searching intelligence, almost a century of American history and the slow growth of a new understanding of the Constitution.

“An ideal biography for the intelligent general reader... the fascination [Holmes] exerts, a combination of toughness and style, shines through this book.” — The New Yorker

“[Novick] is the type of scholar who, though trained in law, asks Harvard’s Arnold Herbarium to identify some leaves pressed into an old love letter... One opens his book with high hopes, and as chapter follows masterly chapter the hopes mature into admiration of author and awe of subject.” — Edmund Morris, The New York Times

“The book’s strength lies in its fast-paced vividness of narrative and its steadiness of belief in the wholeness and stature of Holmes as a man... Novick tells Holmes’s story with verve, insight, and a command of his material. Even his footnotes capture the reader.” — Max Lerner, The New Republic

“[Holmes’s life] is stuff for great biography and Sheldon M. Novick has given us just that... a work of original and exact scholarship... concise and readable, yet provides enough historical and legal background to enable the nonspecialist to read the book with comprehension and pleasure.” — Hon. Richard A. Posner, The Wall Street Journal

I am delighted to see this fine book in a digital edition. It brings to what I hope will be a wider readership the meticulous and thoughtful scholarship and the finely honed intellectual intuition that are the hallmarks of Professor Sheldon Novick's biographies.

As Professor Novick again makes clear in the preface to the digital edition, "Evaluating Holmes’s work as judge and justice, in detail, would be a separate task [which he has indeed taken up elsewhere]. In this biography of the Justice I have striven only to give the major features of his thought and his work." He does that most admirably!

Honorable Justice The Life of Oliver Wendell Holmes edition by Sheldon M Novick Professional Technical eBooks Reviews

Richard Posner calls Justice Holmes "the most illustrious figure in the history of American law." Although Sheldon Novick's biography appeared more than a half century after the justice's death, it was the first complete, full-length biography of Holmes. There are now two other excellent biographies, G. Edward White's and Liva Baker's, but Novick's is the one to read first. It's briefer and less talky than White's and less gossipy than Baker's. The biography is carefully and thoroughly researched, elegantly crafted, and a great read. I especially appreciated Novick's treatment of the romantic relationship between Holmes and Claire Castletown, an English peeress. Although some argue that their relationship must have been physically intimate and others that it probably wasn't, Novick simply sets forth some of Holmes' letters to Castletown and lets readers think what they like. The 2013 edition comes with an informative new preface by Novick that discusses recent writing about Holmes some of the controversies that still surround this towering figure.
I enjoyed Honorable Justice because it was a quick read that took me on a tour of Holmes' life, accomplishments, and circle of friends. The book is a straightforward chronological telling of Holmes' progression from son of a prominent New England family (his father was a co-founder of the Atlantic magazine), to Civil War battlefields (where he was shot multiple times), to law practice and writing, to the top Massachusetts court, to about twenty years on the Supreme Court. Holmes was somewhat contradictory, often surrounded by liberals and championed by them, but sometimes disappointing in his personal views. His personal life is also left a bit mysterious here, as it is hinted that Holmes had many affairs on his regular trips to England and his relationship with his wife was not very strong. The book relies quite a bit on Holmes' own writing to capture his mood regarding something personal or his view on something legal. Holmes has had a long lasting influence on the law. But the book is much more concerned about the temporal confines of Holmes' life and does not discuss his impact due to his writings and Supreme Court opinions.

The book will give you a quick overview of Holmes and a firm appreciation of his work habit and ethic.
A very thorough biography of one of the leading legal experts in American history. Judge Holmes' life experienced some of the most major changes in the history of the US. Shot 5 times in the Civil War fighting to save the Union and end slavery, travelling throughout Europe to meet leaders and discuss legal systems, tutoring Japanese students of law who went on to work to create a new system in Japan and experience the technological changes at the turn of the century-cars, phones and planes.

Lacking is the analysis of his Supreme Court decisions. While he was involved in many important decisions, there is not a great deal of review of these thoughts, the dissensions, the outcomes and the impact on society.

That aside, the depth of who was in his life, the interaction, the impact of others that had on his life and career is important.
This is a very readable biography of Holmes. It is filled with very intimate details of Holmes' life. The book looks thick, but it is filled with wonderful notes that show the work that Novick did in writing it.
Lucid and fascinating biography. Reading it really gives a sense of Holmes as a man, and the times through which he lived--from his service in the Civil War well into the 20th century.
I have to say the book is actually pretty good. I think it goes beyond the need for detail where the Civil War and someone Holmes may have had some kind of affair with, but other than that I am enjoying the book.
